| 内容記述 | It is generally accepted that the "Bardolatry" (the apotheosis of Shakespeare) began, and with it the so-called "Shakespeare Industry" flourished in the 18th century. Indeed, it was around this time that a series of complete works were published, beginning with Nicholas Rowe's edition(1709). The success of the famous actor David Garrick (1717-1779) also contributed to the increase in the number of performances of his works and established Shakespeare's status as "The English National Poet". However, this transformation into a national cultural hero was not achieved overnight, of course. This paper therefore focuses on the reception of Shakespeare during the Restoration period, which has seen a revitalization of research in recent years. In particular, I will focus on the work of Sir William Davenant (1606- 1668), who gained popularity for his adaptations of Shakespeare's works in the 1660s. I will analyze what made Davenant's adaptations so appealing to the contemporary audience. This would also serve as an attempt to explore the prehistory of Shakespeare cult in the 18th century. | |||||||||
