I conducted a questionnaire survey on the relationship between indoor air temperatures and temperature shock in winter. I measured room temperatures in houses in an old residential area in a suburb of Akita City, where outdoor temperatures fall well below freezing in winter. More than 90% were wooden single-family houses that were owned by the residents. The older the resident, the older the house with less heat-insulating window glass. The temperature in living rooms in houses where older residents lived was 18 - 22 ˚C. However, the temperature in bathrooms and changing areas for bathrooms was below 10 ˚C. The difference in temperature was as much as 15 ˚C. However, an insignificant percentage of older residents felt chilly or experienced shivering in their house. This was probably because elderly people tend to become less sensitive to temperature differences and therefore disregard the chilly environment in some parts of their houses. |
