This approach has\nbeen gaining popularity in EFL programs in Japanese universities (Crawford, 2004; Hadley, 1999; Mackenzie, 2000;\nMurphy, 1997). Previous research on content-based language instruction has shown that this approach is “especially\neffective in promoting the acquisition of second language academic and professional language skills” (UCLA Center\nfor World Languages, 2006, p.1). CBI enhances critical thinking skills (Stoller, 2002) and enables students “to learn\nthe language more quickly and with more pleasure” (Murphy, 1997, p.5). Content-based courses can be related to\nlanguage education, such as courses in public speaking or American culture, or have a non-language focus, such as\ncourses in math or maritime science. This article describes an example of a non-language focused content course, a\ncourse in health awareness, that the author has designed and implemented for first-year Akita University medical\nstudents. This paper begins with a brief explanation of content-based instruction, the principles underlying this\napproach, and a description of three general CBI models.
