内容記述 | Content-based instruction (CBI) is an integrated-skills approach for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) that emphasizes learning content while simultaneously developing language skills. This approach has been gaining popularity in EFL programs in Japanese universities (Crawford, 2004; Hadley, 1999; Mackenzie, 2000; Murphy, 1997). Previous research on content-based language instruction has shown that this approach is “especially effective in promoting the acquisition of second language academic and professional language skills” (UCLA Center for World Languages, 2006, p.1). CBI enhances critical thinking skills (Stoller, 2002) and enables students “to learn the language more quickly and with more pleasure” (Murphy, 1997, p.5). Content-based courses can be related to language education, such as courses in public speaking or American culture, or have a non-language focus, such as courses in math or maritime science. This article describes an example of a non-language focused content course, a course in health awareness, that the author has designed and implemented for first-year Akita University medical students. This paper begins with a brief explanation of content-based instruction, the principles underlying this approach, and a description of three general CBI models. This is followed by a detailed description of the course, including the rationale for selecting health awareness as the theme for the course, the course objectives, the materials and activities utilized, and the students’ response to the course. |
