In ‘Rethinking the Soundscape’ Ari Kelman highly praises Alain Corbin’s Village Bells (original title Les cloches de la terre,1994) and argues that ‘Corbin’s work provides a model of scholarship on sound’. Kelman points out that ‘[Corbin] avoids soundscape entirely’, ‘Corbin uses the term “auditory landscape” rather than soundscape’. This article proves that Corbin does not avoid soundscape and this superficial avoidance comes into being partly from translation. The title of French translation of Schafer’s The Tuning of the World is Le paysage sonore and ‘paysage sonore’ is a key word of Les cloches de la terre and used in the subtitle: Paysage sonore et culture de sensible dans les compagnes au XIXe siècle. In the English translation Village Bells, ‘paysage sonore’ is translated as ‘auditory landscape’. Corbin uses ‘soundscape’ in his L’homme dans le paysage and Le ciel et la mer as follows: ‘la notion de paysage sonore (Soundscape)’. In short ‘soundscape’ ≒ ‘paysage sonore’ ≒ ‘auditory landscape’. 　　Is this a negligible error? This article argues that in the spiral transitions in translations or transductions from ‘soundscape’ to ‘paysage sonore’, ‘paysage sonore’ to ‘auditory landscape’, and ‘soundscape’ to its equivalents in other languages, ‘a rich vein of scholarship on sound’ which Kelman tries to explore can be found.
