This paper looks into the background and directions in exploring new areas of work for the intellectually disabled. It has emerged as an issue of great concern with development of employment and work assistance programs for intellectually disabled persons, vis-a-vis the slowdown and decrease in the employment rate and in changes in the country's industrial structure. In addition, pioneering efforts in labor, welfare and education were characterized by partnerships with business enterprises. The typical areas of work had been nursing care and office work assist.
