Various attempts have recently been made to incorporate the history of mathematics in courses at both junior high school and senior high school level education. The origin of mathematics can be traced back to the four major civilizations developed in Egypt, Babylonia, India, and China. However, the notion of mathematics had since taken different routes in each area. The present paper attempts to describe the process of developing a set of materials that were specifically prepared for the optional courses in mathematics for junior high school students. By using the history of mathematics in mathematics class, arguably, it is expected to become possible to provide students with an opportunity to learn how various people were involved in developing the basics of mathematical ideas. |
