Stability, and heat and fluid flow characteristics of flow in periodically grooved channel are investigated by using finite difference method and flow visualization. The flow and temperature fields are assumed to be two-dimensional and fully developed and the wall temperature is kept to be constant. Steady state solution of the flow is obtained for relatively small Reynolds number, whereas it becomes uns and self-sustained oscillatory one at the critical Reynolds number. The critical Reynolds numbers are numerically obtained for three periodicity conditions(m = 1, 2 and 3). It is found that the spatial period of steady flow takes the same one of the channel period, while the one of unsteady flow is varied depending on the periodicity conditions, and the critical Reynolds number is given by m = 2 which is twice larger than channel period. These phenomena are confirmed in experiments with flow visualization. Moreover, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of flow before and after the bifurcation are numerically investigated. |
