This paper attempts to integrate functional and rhetorical perspectives into \"writing\" teaching programs and materials. These perspectives, elucidating the relationships between possible sentences and the choices between semantically equivalent sentences, give us explicit insights on the practical principles of logicality, clarity and conciseness in writing matured English.
