 note = {This paper examined the various states of a regional dialect used in living spaces, classifying them as being intended either for people from within the region or for people from outside of the region. The paper conducted surveys and discussions using the Akita dialect as a case study. An overview of the results is as follows. First, there are three types of dialect usage: “for internal use,” “for external use,” and “for both internal and external use.” Several instances of each type were found. Second, the dialect is mainly used in transport slogans, welcome messages to visitors, titles, mottos, and “names,” e.g., of activities and facilities, but there are also cases where the dialect will be used for only one word in sentences consisting mainly of standard Japanese to add decoration or a certain emphasis to expressions. Third, there is not much variation in the dialectal languages used, and often the same dialect usages will be employed with several aims and meanings. Fourth, local residents have a good understanding of this sort of dialect use and react favorably to it. Both in terms of actual circumstances and of awareness, Akita currently recognizes the utility of using its dialect.},
