In this study, we examined the current status, achievements and problems of the cooperative education between primary and lower secondary schools in Akita Prefecture as well as the opinions of the municipal education committees toward educational continuity from primary through lower secondary levels. Results revealed that the growing trend to establish combined primary and lower secondary schools is strongly associated with the motive to enhance the academic development and student guidance as well as declining birth rates.
