Under physiological conditions,t hese cells play key roles in仕lecontrol of retinoid homeostasis ;th ey express specific receptors for retinol-binding protein (RBP) ,a b inding protein specific for retinol,o n their cell surface,a nd take up the complex of retinol and RBP by receptor-mediated endocytosis. However, under pathological conditions such as liver cirrhosis,lesecells lose retinoids,a nd synthesize al arge amount of extracellular matrix (ECM) components including collagen,pr oteoglycan and adhesive glycoproteins. The morphology of these cells also changes from. the star-shaped stellate cells to that of fibroblasts or myofibroblasts.
