In the current study,\nwe have developed a non-invasive sleep monitoring system that identifies wake\nand sleep of newborn mice using a simple piezoelectric transducer (PZT). Using\nthis system, we have succeeded to detect age-dependent occurrences and\nchanges in sleep fragmentation of orexin/ataxin-3 narcoleptic mice (a\nnarcoleptic mouse of model of postnatal hypocretin/orexin cell death) across the\ndisease onset. We also detected REM sleep/cataplexy patterns (i.e., immobility\nwith clear heart bests [IMHB] signals due to the flaccid posture) by the PZT\nsystem, and found that sudden onset of REM sleep-like episodes specifically\noccur in narcoleptic, but not in wild type mice, suggesting that these episodes\nare likely to be cataplexy.
