Deeken was a main proponent of death education in Japan, which is now actively continued as a citizens' movement. However, in this paper, I point out that important premises of death education lack positive proof, namely, that a human being can understand the essence of death and that its essence can be transmitted to others easily. It is not obvious that these premises hold. In fact, some are of the opinion that humans can neither comprehend the mortal essence nor look at it directly. In addition, proponents of death education claim that death gives meaning and value to life, but others make an argument to the contrary, death gives us nothing. We should consider the words of Jankelevitch, a representative proponent of this contrary view.
