There is teaching ‘play’ as a curriculum of integrating domains and subjects in schools for special education for children with disabilities. But there are many teachers who feel teaching ‘play’ difficult. The course of study for special schools is an important guide for teaching ‘play’. The course of study for special schools were revised in 1983, 1991, 2000 and 2009. This paper examined the differences and similarities of interpretations of teaching play in four manuals of the course of study. Specially referring to 2009’s revision, it was pointed out that teachers were expected to understand play developmentally, and that teachers should not consider play as a way of achieving objectives.
