In 16 cases residual tumor was found on the bronchial margin, in 2 on the pulmonary artery and in one each on the left atrium, aorta, chest wall and pericardium, respectively. Of 16 cases, with residual tumor on the bronchial margin, those in whom residual tumor remained in the mucosa or peribronchial soft tissues by direct extension of the primary tumor had good prognoses with postoperative irradiation. However, those in whom tumor was left in submucosal lymphatics or vessels of the bronchi had poor prognoses, although local recurrence rates might be decreased by irradiation.
