It has been shown that the impaired vestibular function is derived from structural and/or functional degeneration of vestibular hair cells. Methods We quantitatively analyzed the number of hair cells in the utricle of CBA/N mice at 2 different ages (5 weeks old and 26 weeks old) using immunohistochemistry. In addition, electrophysiological properties of type II hair cells were evaluated by the patch clamp method. Results We found a significant difference in the number of hair cells between the two groups, i.e., the number of hair cells was significantly less in the adult group than in the young group. Electrophysiological experiments revealed that the current density of the delayed rectifier K^+ current was significantly lower in adult mice than in young mice, with little change in activation kinetics.
