内容記述 Background: Obesity is a major health concern for both children and adults. Although various biomarkers have been proposed to monitor health in managing obesity, further exploration of key biological factors is needed in clinical practice.
Objectives: This study aims to evaluate serum secretory acid sphingomyelinase (S-ASM) activity as a biomarker for obesity and its related conditions.
Methods: Forty-seven individuals with obesity (percentage of overweight (POW) ≥ 20%) were divided into groups with mild to moderate obesity (POW < 50%) and severe obesity (POW ≥ 50%). Serum S-ASM activity was measured and compared between these groups. Correlations with liver enzyme ratios and S-ASM's diagnostic performance for obesity-related liver dysfunction were assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.
Results: Serum S-ASM activity was higher in the severe obesity group( 7.2 ± 3.6 nmol/ml/h) compared to the mild to moderate obesity group( 4.7 ± 2.2 nmol/ml/h, p=0.03). Serum S-ASM activity negatively correlated with the aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio( r = -0.389, p < 0.01). The area under the curve for diagnosing obesity-related liver dysfunction was 0.732( cut-off 4.70 nmol/ml/h, sensitivity 0.75, specificity 0.78, p=0.006).
Conclusions: Serum S-ASM activity is a potential biomarker for obesity-related comorbidities, particularly liver dysfunction, in children and adolescents.
