Using the KJ coding method for conversation analysis (protocol analysis), this study examined the conversation protocols of 5th-grade students during group discussions in handball physical education lessons to clarify their learning concepts. The subjects included 28 children (boys = 12, girls = 16) participating in physical education lessons involving task-based games and group discussions over seven sessions, treated as one unit. The findings are summarized as follows: Three major categories were identified: "offense ingenuity," "defense ingenuity," and "analyzing game performance and prediction." Within the "offense ingenuity" category, the largest number of conversation segments (n = 97) was recorded, showcasing a wide variety of learning concepts. Students reflected on their own and their opponents' performances during the games. Another major category identified was "goal setting and reflection for enhancing the effect of learning." The findings suggested that this process supported independent learning among the students and played a crucial role in boosting their motivation. Handball, as a team sport, highlighted the importance of communication. This was identified as a major category, encompassing skills such as coordination among group members for successful play, collaborative trial and error in searching for better strategies, and providing advice to enhance group performance. |
