The purpose of this paper is to study this issue in Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture (Japan), with a particular focus on the motivation of the younger generation to visit the area.\n　Noshiro City is promoting itself as a ʻbasketball townʼ and is renowned for its high school basketball team, which was once nationally famous and is said to have inspired the manga Slam Dunk. Currently, Noshiro plans to create chocolate souvenirs and is also focusing on tourism. Therefore, this paper examines university studentsʼ willingness to visit Noshiro and their preferences for souvenirs (particularly chocolate), based on a questionnaire survey.\n　The results indicate that women are more motivated to visit Noshiro than men, that knowledge about Noshiro and prior visits do not directly lead to increased tourism motivation, and that an interest in basketball correlates with a higher motivation to visit Noshiro. While a lack of familiarity with a place does not encourage visitation, being overly familiar with it also does not enhance the willingness to visit. It can be said that ʻawareness without over-familiarityʼ is necessary to stimulate tourism interest.
