| 内容記述 | This paper examines how David Garrick’s celebrity was established after his death by focusing on his two representative biographies. The first is Thomas Davis’s Memoirs of the Life of David Garrick (1780), published shortly after Garrick’s death, which attempts to construct an image of Garrick as the saint protecting the Drury Lane Theatre and its actors. The second is Arthur Murphy’s Life of David Garrick (1801), published at the beginning of the nineteenth century, which further reinforces Garrick’s literary authority and praises him as the founding father of British theatre. The paper suggests the conclusion that the reasons for Garrick’s enduring reputation as a twin star with Shakespeare can partly be attributed to the impact of these image constructions. | |||||||||
