Background : Aneuploid embryos have also been reported to expand, albeit at a slower rate than euploid embryos. Accordingly, we hypothesized that embryonic expansion is related to chromosomal homogeneity. The aim of this study was to investigate why blastocyst expansion is an independent predictor of pregnancy during blastocyst transfer cycles in assisted reproductive technology. This retrospective preliminary study was performed using 103 surplus embryos from 53 couples who opted for assisted reproductive technology at a single center in 2019. Results : The inner diameter of euploid blastocysts (187.6±10.9 μm, n=23) and aneuploid blastocysts (184.0±14.2 μm, n=31) did not differ significantly. However, the inner diameter of mosaic blastocysts (178.6±11.8 μm, n=49) was significantly smaller (P<0.01) than that of euploid blastocysts. The inner diameter of blastocysts and patient characteristics or morphological grading of blastocysts did not significantly differ. In the multivariate analysis, the inner diameter of blastocysts was an independent variable predicting mosaic blastocysts (adjusted odds ratio : 0.95 ; 95% confidence interval : 0.92-0.99 ; P<0.01). Conclusion : The day 6 blastocyst-expansion ability reflects chromosomal mosaicism of the trophectoderm independent of patient characteristics and the morphological grading of blastocysts. |
