Morphological and physiological characteristics were examined in 15 college male students training in the track and field club. Subjects were classified into four groups depending on their chosen event, that is, throwers, sprinters, distance runners, and jumpers. Morphological characteristics were measured on height, body weight, girth at chest, upper arm and thigh, and triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness. Physiological characteristics were determined on maximal anaerobic power, back strength, and maximal oxygen uptake. Analysis of variance and Bonferroni’s multiple comparison showed throwers to be significantly different from other groups in many characteristics. Furthermore, principal component analysis revealed that college track and field students tend to have aerobic and/or anaerobic power appropriate for their chosen event as well as elite athletes. |
