We conducted a national questionnaire survey of 335 nurses and 239 midwives on attributes and study behaviour and commitment.\nThe results were as follows :\n1. Factor analytic studies of commitment extracted three factors, ‘occupation attachment (specialism commitment)’, ‘organization attachment (emotional commitment)’, and ‘life emphasis (continuous commitment)’.\n2. Personnel with at least 20 years’ nursing experience had a higher factor score than personnel with less than 20 years’ experience in the 2nd factor ‘organization attachment’ and the 3rd factor ‘life emphasis’.\n3. In the 1st factor ‘occupation attachment’, the factor scores of midwives were higher than the factor scores of nurses.\n4. 80% or more of the nursing personnel had volition to participate in study inside and outside the workplace.\n5. There was no relationship between any of the factors and study frequency or volition.\nOur results suggested the following :\nStudy opportunities are required which can promote study behaviour to experienced nurses and midwives.
