内容記述 | “Tangram” is a puzzle game which is consisted of seven pieces of triangles and squares. Problem-solvers of this puzzle are presented a task of silhouette and required to make the same configuration using the pieces. Previous studies found that covert and overt evaluations were involved in the successful problem solving of the task. The covert evaluation is thought to be bottom-up processing that is based on information extracted from the actual configuration of the pieces. The overt evaluation is thought to be top-down processing in which the mental representation of a task silhouette was divided into the figures of the pieces. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the size of a task silhouette influence the performance of insightful problem solving of Tangram. Participants were required to complete a figure of “chair” by using the seven pieces. Fourteen participants out of 26 were presented the silhouette as the same size of the correct configuration (same size condition), and the rests were presented a silhouette as the half size in both the latitude and the longitude (scaled down condition). Consistent with previous studies, participants' subjective evaluation for the possibility of the problem solving were decreased as the time course of the task, and this tendency was not differed between the two conditions. Although the probability of successful problem solving that completed the task silhouette were not different between the two groups of participants, the averaged time for the completion was shorter in the same size condition than in the scaled down condition. This result suggested that the direct matching between the representations of a divided silhouette and the actual configuration of the pieces relieved cognitive loadings and facilitated the top-down process. It did not facilitate, however, the gaining of insight which directly led a problem-solver to the correct configuration. | |||||||||
