The purpose of this study was to clarify the actual situation of career development needs and to consider organizational supports for midwives working in hospitals. The subjects were 308 midwives and 321 nurses working in Japanese hospitals with obstetrics and gynecology departments. As results of a questionnaire, the most frequent career direction which midwives wanted was \"worklife balance\", followed by \"specialist expertise\". The proportion of midwives who had a career program was significantly lower than nurses (p<0.0001). Goal attainment levels of the midwives were not different from nurses, and the most common reason for being unable to attain goals was \"lack of time\". However, the number of midwives giving the reason \"there is no training program or career course\"was significantly higher than nurses. Therefore we could assume that midwives had difficulty in considering their career plan.\nAlso, as a result of multiple regression analysis examining factors affecting goal accomplishment for midwives, age, training program, continuing consciousness of occupation were positively correlated, and the spouse was negatively correlated.
