This study was conducted to evaluate the cognitive traits involved in reading ability. The subjects were 162 adults (university students and professional teachers). They were asked to rate themselves on their reading abilities during their elementary school days. Furthermore, they were given the two phonological processing assignments, phonological awareness task and verbal short-term memory task. The following results were obtained in this study. The scores of phonological awareness task and verbal shortterm memory task, which ranged from low levels to high levels, showed the normal distribution. The average score of phonological awareness task was significantly higher in the group of adults who rated themselves"good at reading"during their elementary school days than in the group of adults who rated themselves"not good at reading"during those days. There was no significant difference in the average score of verbal short-term memory task between the two groups. Moreover, there was no correlation between the phonological awareness task and the verbal short-term memory task. These results showed that phonological awareness was involved in reading ability although the involvement of verbal short-term memory seemed to be limited. |
