The present paper reports on an\nattempt to solve this type of problem by employing\nthe approaches expounded by the notions of\nfield-internship and gaming simulation as educational\npracticum. Both approaches have been\naccepted by the Japanese Ministry of Education\nas Good Practice COP) or the Distinctive Educational\nActivity program during the years from\n2003 to 2006. Field-internship is the term coined\nby combining two words fieldwork and internship,\nmeaning a type of practice by which students receIve an on-the-job training outside\nuniversity. By so doing, it is expected that they\nwould make use of it as a chance to put their\nknowledge into practice. It was further anticipated\nthat such experiences of the students would\nbe returned to the community. Gaming simulation\nis the instructional method that is intended\nto help students experience a hand-on job in a\nsimulated classroom setting, whereby they may\nacquire a type of skill that will readily be usable\nin authentic situations. Following the principle\nof these two methods, the present authors\nconducted pre-service teacher training courses in\nmusic. One was concerned with extra-curricular\n~30fj- 2008if\nactivities and mUSIC appreciation courses as\npart of community service, while the other was\nthe teaching of a Japanese traditional dance\ncalled Nishimonai Bon festival dance. The paper\nprovides detailed accounts of the process of\ncarrying out the courses.
