In this\nstudy, we conducted screening of lower grade\nelementary school students in order to review\nmethods for early detection of children with\ndyslexia. The subjects consisted 672 grade 1 and 2\nelementary school students attending normal\nclass. The screening was carried out in two\nstages. In the first stage, class teachers were\nasked to evaluate reading and writing skills in\nthe children using a checklist, and select children\nwith problems. As a result, 18 children were\nselected from the first graders and 46 from the\n84\nsecond graders. In the second stage, the\nScreening Test of Reading and Writing for\nJapanese Primary School Children (STRAW)\nand substitute IQ test \"Raven's Colored Progressive\nMatrices (PCPM)\" were conducted on the\nselected children individually. Eventually, one\nfirst grader (0.3%) and ten second graders\n(2.9%) were suspected to have dyslexia.
