In the past, deathbed rituals to pray for passage into Buddhist paradise were important, and\nmonks performed terminal care. Modern terminal care involves : distinction of actual death from apparent\ndeath ; postmortem treatment ; observation of signs of death ; management of the environment ; keeping\nlimbs warm. From the Meiji period, 1) the anti-Buddhist movement stemming from the separation of\nBuddhism and Shinto led to the collapse of Buddhist nursing, 2) Medical law required a doctor, not a\nmonk, to be present at the deathbed. 3) Epidemics were prevalent.
