Don) bark was pyrolyzed in a stream of N2 at 573-1273\nK for 3-12 h under atmospheric pressure. Fibers of the cedar bark that mainly comprise\ncellulose, hemicellulose and lignin shrunk during heat treatment. However breaking down of the\nfibers was not observed during the pyrolysis, leading to the formation of fibrous carbon materials\nfrom cedar bark. The development of micro porosity was observed for the materials pyrolyzed at\ntemperatures above 773 K. The increase in specific surface area and total pore volume was due to\nthe selective formation of micro pores which were distributed sharply around 0.32 to 0.4 nm in\nradius. Analysis of adsorption data by I-plot and a ,-plot methods suggest that the properties of\nthe surface of carbonaceous cedar bark pyrolyzed below 873 K are quite different from those of\ntypical carbon black, while those of cedar bark pyrolyzed at 1073-1273 K are similar to that of\ncarbon black.
