Linear Stability of Impinging Jet in a Symmetric T-shape Channel

We have conducted the linear stability analysis of impinging jet flow in a symmetric T-shape channel by using the spectral element method. The flow field is assumed to be two-dimensional and incompressible. The flow is in a steady-state and symmetric with the centerline of the channel at a relatively small Reynolds number, whereas an asymmetric flow occurs at a critical Reynolds number due to instability. In order to evaluate the critical Reynolds number, the linear stability theory is applied to the complex laminar flow with a stagnation point in the T-shape channel by constituting the generalized eigenvalue problem of matrix form. The critical Reynolds number can be determined by the sign of a linear growth rate of the eigenvalues. It is found that the steady symmetric flow bifurcates to the asymmetric steady one as a result of Pitchfork bifurcation.
