An Overview of the Nursing Foundation Course "Social Rehabilitation of Mentally Handicapped Patients" : -Analysis of Students' Records of Psychiatry Visiting Nursing-
In order to bring to light problems involved in teaching the nursing foundation course "Social
Rehabilitation of Mentally Handicapped Patients" and to explore strategies for the improvement of instruction,
we analysed the records of students participating in home health visit practicals, and conducted a survey to
understand the situation of students' studies in psychiatry visiting nursing.
Four categories could be obtained from students' notes: I. role and necessity of home-visit nursing care,
2. concern for patient and patient's family, 3. psychiatry nursing skills, 4. qualities required of a nurse.
We showed the importance of a support system to aid rehabilitation and the necessity of emphasizing the
importance of cooperation. Enabling students to express their feelings frankly and providing opportunities for
this in lectures is also important.
